Shared Decision Making at Seneca Street

At the September Board of Education meeting, the board approved the current Oneida City School District Shared Decision Making Plan.

The New York State Board of Regents adopted Section 100.11 of the Regulations of the Commission of Education, which requires public school district boards of education to adopt a plan to include teachers and parents in school-based planning and shared decision making.

Our Shared Decision Making Plan states:

Shared decision making is driven by the belief that the most effective choices are made when those affected by the decisions are involved in the decision making process. It is a process by which members of an educational community cooperate in identifying and implementing activities to advance and improve learning. This process is used to assist with the realization of programs, services, collaboratively deciding on issues, and resolving problems. The goal is to utilize the expertise and perspective of representatives to guide and shape decisions that positively impact student outcomes.

A Shared Decision Making Committee (SDMC) was recently launched at Seneca Street School with a first meeting held earlier this month. The SDMC consists of teachers, the school principal, a parent representative, and student representatives.

The SDMC will meet once per month to work on issues related to student performance, which may include:

  • Health and Safety
  • Parental Involvement
  • School/Classroom Procedures
  • Budget
  • Data Review
  • Curriculum Review
  • Communication
  • Community Participation

All SDMC meetings will be open to parents and the general public. Visitors are non-participating observers, meaning they may not speak during the meeting. Our principal will present further information about the committee and share minutes from the first SDMC meeting at our next PTO meeting on November 7th at 6:00 p.m.

The Shared Decision Making Committee is independent from the PTO. However, as an organized parent group for Seneca Street School, the Seneca Street PTO will assist in communicating SDMC news to parents and ensuring that parent issues are heard. We hope all Seneca Street parents will be active participants in their children’s education.

The next meeting of the Shared Decision Making Committee will be held on Monday, November 26th at 3:00 p.m. in the art room.
